Reviving Uli: Preserving Nigeria’s Intangible Cultural Heritage

In Nigeria and many other parts of Africa, clothing is an important aspect of our culture. Each ethnic group can be identified through language, facial marks, and the way they dress. Clothing tells a lot about a person’s background and identity.
A story was told of a Ghanaian who travelled to New York for a conference and, in a crowded hall, spotted a stranger at the far end wearing Kente attire. Instinctively, he felt a sense of brotherhood with the stranger. Social psychologists believe we inadvertently feel a sense of oneness with anyone whose dress aligns with our culture.
Inspired by this, I began painting portraits of leading Nigerian politicians wearing the attire of other ethnic groups. UNESCO reminds us, “Today, peace requires ever more active investment, enlightened leadership, powerful educational values, and extensive research in social innovation.” These values drive my art and the work of the Education Department of the National Museum of Unity in Enugu.
