Reviving Uli: Preserving Nigeria’s Intangible Cultural Heritage

In 2003, UNESCO recommended that cultural institutions, such as museums, increase their efforts to protect intangible cultural heritage (ICH). One such tradition is the ancient Uli body painting, developed by Igbo women in southeastern Nigeria. For generations, Uli flourished, was passed down from one generation to the next, and enjoyed widespread popularity.
However, with the arrival of Christian missionaries in Igboland, Uli was misinterpreted as a pagan practice, leading to its gradual decline and near disappearance.
As an artist and museum professional, I have taken it upon myself to revive and preserve the Uli body art tradition. Through my work, I hope to safeguard this vital aspect of Nigeria’s cultural heritage and ensure its continued relevance for future generations.
Founded in 1998 by Ike Tochukwu Aloysius, Art for Dialogue showcases diverse works by artists from Nigeria’s National Museum of Unity, Enugu. It promotes intercultural dialogue and peaceful coexistence, fighting against discrimination.
Ike bridges traditional Igbo art with contemporary forms, fostering understanding across cultures. Art for Dialogue advocates for inclusivity and social progress through museum education and initiatives aligned with UN SDGs, promoting dialogue through Art and Education.
