Reviving Uli: Preserving Nigeria’s Intangible Cultural Heritage

UNESCO reminds us that, “Today, Peace requires ever more active investment, enlightened leadership, powerful educational values, and extensive research in social innovation”. In line with this and SDG number 16, Artists and Education Department of National Museum of Unity, Enugu believes that any effort to foster a culture of peace and understanding must start with the young ones at the formative stage of their lives. Hence we developed the unity puzzle game for children.
Here the words of the former United States president Franklin-D-Roosevelt comes to mind, “We may not be able to prepare the future for our children, but we can at least prepare our children for the future.”

Nigeria is made up of 36 states and a federal capital, hence we used a fret saw to “divide” Nigeria into 37 (36 states and FCT) parts to form a puzzle. The idea behind this puzzle game was for the children to “bring Nigeria together” with their hands.

It started like a game with Nigerian children of different ethnic groups and religion participating. Then gradually went into a competition stage to determine the child that will ‘put Nigeria together’ first.
The idea behind Unity Game is to let Nigerian Children (irrespective of tribe or religion) can put heads together to figure out how to unite a broken nation.
We do not know yet the psychological effect of this game on the psyche of the young ones but it was fun.

Founded in 1998 by Ike Tochukwu Aloysius, Art for Dialogue showcases diverse works by artists from Nigeria’s National Museum of Unity, Enugu. It promotes intercultural dialogue and peaceful coexistence, fighting against discrimination.
Ike bridges traditional Igbo art with contemporary forms, fostering understanding across cultures. Art for Dialogue advocates for inclusivity and social progress through museum education and initiatives aligned with UN SDGs, promoting dialogue through Art and Education.
